Too many host aliases

Did you know that you should avoid having too many host aliases such as http://somekeyword.yourdomain.com?

Some DNS servers allow you to use wildcard host names. This means that just about anything that is typed as host for your domain will be redirected to your web site.

An example would be:

  • http://www.domain.com

are all directed to the same web site through the wildcard DNS/Host system.

This used to be very attractive in the past when keywords in your domain name were very important. The wildcard system allowed for any keyword to be attached to your web site name.

However many people abused that system and it’s now penalized by many search engines. You should better limit the number of keywords in your domain name to a few very important and relative ones.
